Squirrel Control In Lancashire & The North West

Grey Squirrel Problems and Squirrels in lofts

There is no doubt that grey squirrels are becoming more common. This is to the detriment of our native red squirrels and song bird populations, but also the chances of them entering our homes and properties is also increasing. This is of course posing real problems and it becomes ever more likely to cause conflict. Serious problems are almost certain and we see it on a weekly basis here at Smiths Pest Control, if you get squirrels in loft spaces, given the amount of wires and pipes that most people have up there they will almost certainly cause damage if not dealt with quickly. We have also seen a number of cases where squirrels in lofts have caused flea infestations throughout the property below.

In most cases when we receive a call about squirrels its in relation to squirrels in loft spaces. Right across Lancashire and Greater Manchester, from town centres to suburban homes and into our more rural areas squirrels always manage to find and exploit a loft space. Here they are at best  likely to cause disturbance to the residents below, one squirrel will often sound like a herd of elephants to someone in the room underneath and with their digging and scratching people are often scared that the squirrel will come through the ceiling. This is highly unlikely but in the dead of night they certain sound like they could! At worst they begin to chew wires that run through the loft space posing a real threat of expensive repairs due to lose of services and also the attached threat of fire from exposed wires. We have many times seen homes flooded after squirrels chew through plastic water pipes.

Squirrel Trouble

When we get a report of squirrels in lofts, we often find they have gained access through fascia boards and soffits, causing a lot of damage in the process, which can be even more serious should they damage roofing tiles in their efforts to gain access. This isn’t uncommon and they stop at nothing. Some of the worst damage is when they have nested in a loft and then  they are blocked out. The damage they cause in their desperation to get back in has to be seen to be believed!

As has been mentioned Grey squirrels will also carry fleas, these are often very obvious when one views a squirrel close up, they often have very high levels of flea infestations. These fleas can in some cases infest the house below, breeding and reproducing in the carpets and furniture. This, of course, leads to further pest control issues. It isn’t a pleasant experience dealing with high levels of fleas in a home.

Grey squirrel: Sciurus carolinensis-Facts and information.

The squirrels that we often see in our gardens and parks were first brought to Britain in the mid-19th century and it didn’t take long for it to spread. Many of the squirrels that we see  today came from releases at Woburn Park, Bedfordshire. They were introduced here from North America, where they are seen as a game animal, hunted under license and are favourite on the dinner plate, with cajun chicken being a favourite. It is thought that there are upwards of 2 million squirrels in Britain today, compared to around 100,00 of our Native Red Squirrels which now only exist in small isolated populations. Here in the North West I have seen squirrels out near Formby and also at Holmeswood near Southport.
